HMS Talent

Value, Challenge and Inspire!

Percy madness!

Today we performed some of Percy’s I-spy and a Springtime Shirley Hughes poem in assembly. We were great and spoke very clearly!
Thank you to all the parents who came to watch us and spent some time visiting our classroom. We really enjoyed having you!
Later Miss Etherington captured this lovely photo, showing an engrossed reader enjoying a book in Percy’s bandstand!

Our amazing classroom!

As you know, we are learning about Percy the Park Keeper. We had a little brainstorm to decide what we wanted as a role play area. We decided to really challenge Miss Etherington and ask for a bandstand, just like the one in Percy’s park! So, Miss Etherington spoke to Mr Stretton who made us an amazing wooden bandstand, which we then worked as a team to decorate. We absolutely love reinacting Percy stories in the bandstand and are so grateful to Mr Stretton for building it. Miss E bought him some chocolate and many of us made him cards!

Take a look at the busy day of decorating that we had…..

Trip to Hilliers

On Thursday, the sun was shining and HMS Talent were in high spirits. They were off to Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey for a fun packed day of outdoor learning. They were impeccably behaved and had a wonderful time. Miss Etherington’s favourite quote the day was ‘This didn’t feel like a trip, more like a day out with my family!’

Take a little look at our slideshow to see what we got up to!

Shooting up!

What an amazing surprise we came in to find this morning! The sunflower seeds we planted last week have suddenly begun to shoot up! Only 3 people are still waiting to say hello to their seedlings.
Whose will grow the tallest?

Making Bird Feeders

As part of the Hampshire Illustrated Book Award topic, we have spent this week focusing on the story of George Flies South!

The recent freezing weather conditions made us have a think about birds that visit our school searching for worms and other food. So we decided to make bird feeders. We used lard, bird seed, raisins and cheese to help the birds to survive this harsh winter.

It was smelly, sticky and most of all, FUN! We even spent some time outside watching and listening for birds. As it happens, Mrs May is a bit of an expert!

(Thank you to Jess Thomas in Year 6 for making these Animoto videos.)

Apologies for problems with some of our recent Animoto slideshows. We are hoping to correct them soon!

World Book Day 7th March 2013

We had such a GREAT World Book Day yesterday. We listened to stories by different teachers and some of the parents from our class. We also had some ‘chillout’ time where we got to share our own books with our friends and children from other classes, whilst snuggling under our blankets and with cushions and teddies.

Our EXTREME reading homework was also fantastic. Henry was reading in a dustbin, Emily was on top of the fridge, on a shelf AND in the tumble dryer, and Kieran was on the toilet!

Luckily we also got to go to the Library with Mrs Dale because our library days are Thursday and we also made some personalised Book Marks to use at home.

We love stories in Year 1 and now I & think we love them just a tiny bit more!

Mr Campbell’s photos

Mr Campbell has kindly made us a fantastic video of photographs from our Dinosaur Cafe.  We loved re-living the memories of the afternoon and the adults in our class thought that some of the pictures showed our excellent concentration, thinking and lots of warm smiles.

Some of us wrote ‘thank yous’ to Mr Campbell and we loved his music choice!

Our Natural Sculptures

This week we begun our topic linked to the Hampshire Illustrated Book Award and our book this week is called Stanley’s Stick.

We went down to the woods at the bottom of the field and collected our own sticks which we have used to make an invention to inspire some writing. We’ve also used it in maths for finding out the weight and length of our sticks using different units of measure.

Yesterday we had a look at some artists that made sculptures using natural materials and then went outside to create sculptures in teams.

It was so much fun. What do you think of our work?P1030646

Dinosaur Cafe fun!

What an amazing afternoon. WELL DONE Year 1 for hosting a great afternoon with yummy food and great entertainment for your parents, aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas & little brothers and sisters! I think they loved it.

Also a massive thank you to all of the school team for their help with writing orders and serving drinks and the lovely FOTs ladies for all their help with making drinks, funding and the big clear-up afterwards!

We raised a brilliant £51.53 for Help4Harvey and you all deserve to be very proud of yourselves.

Have a wonderful half term break.

Love Miss E :)

PS Mr Campbell took loads of photos for us so i’ll put them on here as soon as I get them!
